How Should a Christian View Politics?

Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 2:6-8

The response of Jesus to the political question raised by the Apostles can be summarized as, “it’s none of your business”.

He assured them that the political situation of Israel was in God’s hand. God has already set the date and times by His own authority, independent from the authorities of the earth. All other rulers and kingdoms are only servants of God, used by Him to fulfill His plan.

Christians should never put their hope in earthly kingdom to bring peace and hope on earth because the scriptures clearly teach that all the kingdoms of this earth will not last. God will use each one of them to fulfill His purpose, whether evil or good, but in the end it’s the kingdom of Christ that will last. That’s the kingdom we should hope for.

To hope in temporary and imperfect kingdom is to be deceived into false hope. No matter how good, godly, and righteous a leader may be, we cannot put our hopes on that leader or that kingdom because it is imperfect and will not last.

That’s the reason why Jesus tells the disciples that it’s God’s business. He chooses whomever he wants to choose, and he dethrones whomever He wants to dethrone. All power and authority belong to Him. Kings and kingdoms will all pass away, but Jesus and His kingdom will remain high and exalted forever.

Therefore, our responsibility as Christians should be to preach good news of the kingdom of God. We should focus more on inviting people to the kingdom of Christ, where there will be no death, no suffering, no troubles, no sickness, and no evil. With this in mind, we should always set our hope in the Lord.

I am a Christian who believes in the authority of the Scripture and in the power of the Holy Spirit, who lives in and with us to reveal the word, teach us the truth, and help us walk in the truth various ways including the gifts of the Spirit, for the purpose of equipping the saints to become mature in Christ and to come to the fullness of God.
