Winning The Battle For Your Mind

Controlling our thoughts is not easy! The wrong decisions that we often make are mostly influenced by the thoughts that we entertain. However, if we can control our thoughts, then we can make better choices every time we are faced with challenges. How do we control our thoughts? This simple truth will help control our minds and bring peace and calmness back into our lives.

Be renewed in the Spirit of Our minds

Many people have been looking for different solutions to control their minds, but God’s word has the true solution. It’s only The Creator that knows how to fix us, and He has given us this truth in His word to overcome the attack of the enemy in our minds.

Being renewed in our minds is the true solution to deal with ungodly thoughts. We should be renewed in the Spirit of our minds because thoughts do not come from within us. Thoughts come from outside, through our senses — what we see, smell, touch, feel, and hear. We cannot prevent ourselves from thinking because we live in a world of senses, which gather information continuously into our brains.  What we can do, instead, is to filter out thoughts that come to our minds, and we do that by being changed from within. To renew our minds, we need to cleanse and purify that part of us that processes our thoughts, which is our mind. When we are renewed in the spirit of our mind, we can process the thoughts that come to us properly and make the right decisions.

Many times the reason why evil thoughts persist in our minds is because we entertain them. Jesus, when talking to the Pharisees “knew what they were thinking, so he asked them, “Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts?” Matthew 9:4

The problem with the Pharisees was that they allowed evil thoughts in their mind. What they needed to do was to understand their problem, repent and turn to Christ to receive new heart and new spirit, and be renewed in their mind by the word of Christ.

When we are changed from the inside genuinely, we can overcome whatever comes from the outside by the Spirit of God, who lives on the inside of us. The Spirit will strengthen us, so that Christ will dwell our hearts and help us to overcome every overpowering thoughts. Apostle Paul explains how we can win the battle against any ungodly thoughts when he says,

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5

This sums up what we have been saying that Christ, who dwells in us, has the power to overcome any dominating thoughts that come from the outside.

How do we renew the spirit our minds?

Therefore, we renew our minds by walking in the Spirit. The Spirit will always remind us the words of Jesus, as we consciously depend on Him. This means, if we have the Spirit, we will always be changed by Him, as we pay attention to the words of Christ.

For this reason, we must always be filled with the Holy Spirit! To be filled with the Spirit is to let Christ dwell in our hearts. When Jesus says, in John 15:5, ” …without me you cannot do anything” (John 15:5), He is emphasizing our need to continuously live by faith in His word so that we can become victorious in our everyday lives.

If we depend on Jesus everyday, then we should not read the Bible just to get knowledge, but to know Christ. The reason God gave us His word is so that we can get to know the Savior, Jesus Christ. Therefore, we must read the Bible to believe and act on the word of God. If we are in need of help, we should ask the Holy Spirit, not only to reveal and teach us the word, but to strengthen us so that we can practically live the Word of God.

Why is having the word in our hearts important? It’s because the more the word lives in the inside of us, the more our mind is renewed to overcome the thoughts that come through our senses. The more the word dominates our mind, the more we begin to live above our senses. We begin to live in the Spirit when the Word dominates our hearts. Living in the Spirit is higher than living in the senses. That’s the reason why Apostle Paul says,

“…and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7

You see, there is an experience which passes understanding. The Holy Spirit working in our life can overcome any dominating thoughts by lifting us higher than our thoughts. There is a realm that’s higher than our senses, and that’s the realm of the Spirit. The more we yield to the Spirit, the more the Spirit takes control over our life.

In short, what I am saying is, walking in the Spirit will renew our mind and will prepare us to overcome any challenges that come through our thoughts.

One thing we must understand is that we cannot control our thoughts without the Holy Spirit. It’s impossible! People have written books about how to control thoughts using different techniques, but it doesn’t work. Human means of solving spiritual problem is a heavy burden that leads to more bondage. That’s the reason why Jesus said,

Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29)

Only Jesus will give true rest, because He does not add rules and regulations. He simply asks us to believe and obey what the Spirit says when we give Him our everything. If we would give our entire life over to Jesus (that’s the only yoke He tells us to carry, which is not heavy at all), then He will fill our lives with His Spirit, and we will have the peace that passes all understanding.

If you do not know the Lord, it’s important give your life over to Jesus because He is the One that God has sent to deliver humanity from destruction. If we are looking for freedom from bondage, He is the Only One who has the power and the means to deliver us from all our bondage’s. Therefore, look to Jesus now and live!

I am a Christian who believes in the authority of the Scripture and in the power of the Holy Spirit, who lives in and with us to reveal the word, teach us the truth, and help us walk in the truth various ways including the gifts of the Spirit, for the purpose of equipping the saints to become mature in Christ and to come to the fullness of God.
