How to be Free From the Power Of Sin

God speaks to us in many ways to get right with Him, but, oftentimes, we ignore God’s warning and fall into sin and reap the consequences of our sins. Sin always looks pleasurable until we are faced with the consequences. No sin has a good consequence, There is no sin in the world that has a good ending, but almost all sins look good in the beginning. Why is it that we cannot understand the consequence of sin from the beginning? We have the capacity to know the consequences but why don’t we have the power to make the right decisions? Apostle Paul made the same question in Romans 7 when he said, “wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from this body of death?” The reason why we cannot make the right decisions is because we are wretched men. We are by nature evil. Although we were created without sin, when we failed we became corrupt. We were sold as a slave to sin, and sin became our master.

When we sinned, we were separated from God. The life giving Spirit that was with and in us was no longer welcomed and as a result of that we had no strength to do what was right. We had the knowledge of good and evil through our conscience, but we did not have the capacity to love and to do what is good.

Evil overpowered us because of our disobedience, and we lived as slaves of sin until Jesus showed up. When Jesus came to earth, He destroyed the power of sin in our lives by coming in the likeness of our flesh, so that He could pay the penalty for our sins and free us from the dominion of sin. He came in the likeness of our body and defeated sin by living a perfect life! Now, anyone knows that it’s impossible to live a perfect life in this body, but Jesus did it in His humanity! No, He did not use His divinity to defeat sin. He laid aside all his power and glory and was absolutely dependent upon the power of the Spirit for every work. He prayed and depended on God, and He was tempted like us in all manners, but He never sinned! That’s why we worship the God-Man Jesus because He is perfect! His perfection is unfathomable! Sin entered the world through the sin of one man Adam, and through his disobedience, all were born sinners. In the same manner, it was enough for one man to defeat sin in the flesh and perfect all who would believe in Him. That’s the reason why Jesus said, “If you don’t eat my flesh and drink my blood you have not life in you” because the body and blood of Jesus is perfect to sanctify and free us from the bondage of sin. Just as we partook of Adam though the natural birth, we become a partaker of the life of Jesus through spiritual birth by believing and trusting in Him. That’s what being born of the Spirit means. We Adam’s children through natural birth and we become God’s children through spiritual birth.

So when Jesus came, He defeated sin and all those who believed in Him became a partaker of His victory because when we believe in Him, we became one with Him. We identified with His death, and resurrection because Jesus did not die for Himself–He was perfect, His death on the cross was for us. He died in the place of us, and therefore when we believe in Him, we can be assured that we were crucified with Him because the cross represents our punishment. If we became a partaker of His death, and resurrection then we live with Him, meaning, we now have received His life to live a life free from the bondage of sin because the penalty for sin has been paid off. That’s the reason why the book of Hebrews says, “He has perfected those who believe in Him once and for all”. His sacrifice was enough to get rid of the power of sin in our lives. Now, through His blood, we have power to overcome sin.

That means, we can now have the power to resist and overcome sin. Before we accepted Christ in our lives we did not have the power to do what is right even when we knew it was wrong, but now, after we believed in the One who gave Himself for our liberty, we have the power to hate sin and walk away from it because the life of Jesus is manifested in our lives. Now, we have another law called the law of the Spirit, by which the Spirit leads us in the way of the truth. What we lost in Adam, we now received in Christ Jesus to become temples in whom the Spirit of God dwells. The key is the Spirit dwelling in our hearts. If we are in the Spirit, we can never sin because the Spirit always leads us to the truth. Therefore, we are no longer in bondage of sin. But we now have the obligation of living in the Spirit because as long as we have the flesh, we are capable of living in the law of sin. Jesus has already made the provision and He has given us the victory over sin, but we are obligated to live in the Spirit. How do we live in the Spirit? By yielding and submitting everything we have over to God. By trusting in Jesus and living in Him. The Spirit always reminds us of what Jesus has spoken to us. Therefore, we must be obedient to the Spirit by making it our duty to read the Scriptures. We must also be praying, as we are commanded to pray in the Spirit. When we pray, we get the strength to weaken our fleshly desires and obey the voice of the Spirit. But the key here is not to go back to the rules and regulations of the law, it’s to live in Jesus Christ by the power of the Spirit. The life of Christians is a life of faith, because the righteous live by faith. The work we do is the result of our faith not vice versa. Our work is the work produced by the Holy Spirit when we obey the Spirit and believe in Jesus Christ and His word. When we live our lives completely dependent on Jesus Christ, we live. Because we live, sin power over our lives is broken.

Now the Lord is the Spirit

John 14:15-17

15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[c] in you.

I have read this portion the Bible for many years, and yet I had understood it wrongly all these years. I assumed that Jesus is asking here for more self-effort to receive the Spirit. However, I came to realize that the gift of the Holy Spirit is not given as a result of our self-effort to obey His commands. Instead, it’s the other way around. Our obedience to the commands of Jesus Christ is as a result of the Holy Spirit dwelling with us and in us.

What Jesus was saying here is that He would give us the Holy Spirit so that we can obey His commands, not we should obey His commands to receive the Spirit. Our love for Jesus Christ is revealed in our obedience to His word. We obey His Word because the Holy Spirit is in us and with us. Hallelujah!!!

“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you” John 14:18.

Jesus is not a God who will give you a set of rules and commandments to keep and leave you alone to struggle by yourself! We are not struggling to please God alone! We have Jesus who is ever present in us and through us defeating the forces of darkness and the world and leading us to victory unto eternal life! Hallelujah!

When Jesus was speaking these words, the disciples were in grief and fear of loneliness because Jesus was about to be taken away from them. But Jesus assures them that they would not be like orphans in grief and loneliness, because the Holy Spirit is coming! Hallelujah! Jesus, although in heaven now, is made real to us by the Holy Spirit! That’s the reason why we worship Him with passion and reverence!

“whom having not seen, ye love. In Him, though now ye see Him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory” 1 Peter 1:8

Praise God!

That’s also the reason why the Spirit is called the comforter! He comforts us by making the presence of Jesus more real in our lives! And that’s also the reason why Apostle Paul says

“ …now the Lord is the Spirit” 2 Corinthians 3:17

The Spirit will only show Jesus, reveal Jesus, and display Jesus in your life that it would be so hard to not to recognize Him. Therefore, the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only His coming, but also the coming of the Son of God, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ into our lives.

The coming of Jesus by His Spirit into our hearts would mean that Jesus will continue to do the work of the Father by His Spirit in our hearts. The reason why the world is in such a mess is because there is darkness everywhere! Sin is more prevalent than ever before, sickness, disease, troubles, murder, violence, and all sorts of evil are in this world. When Jesus came to earth he began to undo all of the work of the enemy! He came to bring light in darkness. He came to heal the sick, to pardon sinners, and proclaim good news to those who were poor in the spirit! Now, after having done all this, Jesus was about to be taken away from them and grief filled their hearts. They were not sure who would bring light in darkness, but Jesus gave them this awesome assurance – I will come to you!

The solution to problems of this world is not a smart leader! It’s not having many rich people on earth! It is estimated that there are 2,208 billionaires in this world, but none of them have gotten rid of poverty and the world is still in suffering. Jesus is the answer to the calamities of this world. He is the answer to every broken heart! He’s the answer to a confused mind. He’s the answer to all who are heavy laden. Only Jesus is the answer!

Even after this wonderful revelation of the promise of Jesus to ever abide and work in us by His Spirit, the sad reality is that people, who once understood this great revelation are now leaving the faith and following after other gods. They are being greatly deceived by the deceitfulness of riches and of this world. Some are turning to other gods to worship them, going back to the former darkness and bondage! The god of this world is blinding them to understand and stand in their freedom which Christ bought by His own blood!

However, we know that following Jesus is a choice! The Gospel is preached by those who are sent by God and people must make the choice for salvation. The Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgement. That means everyone! The Bible clearly says that the Spirit of truth will convict the world of righteousness because they do not believe in Jesus. This means that the Holy Spirit will reveal the necessity of believing Jesus for salvation to everyone, including those who will perish! I’ve heard some people say that the Spirit only convicts those that will be saved, but that’s not true. Everyone is given the revelation of the need to believe in Jesus. But in the end, it’s your choice! You have the choice to accept God’s grace or to reject and be condemned. Although it’s not your choice that gives you eternal life but God’s mercy, it’s your choice that condemns you. Those who choose Jesus are those who obey His commands!

“If a man love me, he will keep my words” John 14:23

How do we obey the commandments? By the Holy Spirit! And the Holy Spirit is given to those who show genuine desire to obey His commandments. Not everyone who claims to know Jesus loves Him, but only those who make it their goal to obey His commands! It’s to those who understand the need for the Savior, to those who are poor in the spirit, who understand their need of spiritual awakening, who know that Jesus is the answer to every problem in this world, that Jesus promises the abiding of Holy Spirit. You see, the conviction of the Holy Spirit is for everyone, but the abiding is only for those who make it their goal to obey the commandments of Jesus Christ.

How much hungry are you for Jesus? How much do you want to know Him? How much are you willing to forsake everything for the sake of the knowledge of Christ? You see, the Spirit is given only to those who are hungry for Him! To those who are hungry to have more of Christ.

God is using everything to bring us to Christ Jesus.

The situation that we are facing now are all pointing to Jesus! There is a cry in everyone’s heart for someone who would bring absolute peace, absolute joy, absolute liberty, absolute happiness, and absolute life! The more we see wickedness, suffering, pain, injustice, wars, and all evil in this world, the more our hunger increases for Jesus! Sometimes God uses or allows these situations to turn our eyes on Jesus. We are always forgetful of the miracles that God does. We always tend to worship people rather than God. We appreciate our efforts rather than the divine intervention of God. Therefore, God shakes us a little to understand how much we need Him. Right now, the world is in great shaking. God is shaking the nations and people are once again crying for survival, they are crying for justice, crying for help and this is the right atmosphere for us to understand the need for Jesus. Now is the time for salvation. Sometimes God has to melt us and mold us before he can fill us with His glory and use us to bring Christ on the scene. Therefore, He will use every situation to melt our stubborn heart and bring us to the truth that we need Jesus.

To those who are poor in the spirit, God will bring comfort. The Spirit dwelling with them and in them will bring the reality of Jesus in their lives, making Jesus more real to them than anything in life.

“Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live” John 14:18.

The world cannot see Jesus because He is not here physically, but Jesus also living in you by the Spirit will use you to do the works that He was doing while he was on earth. You will become the vessels of His glory, where in Christ dwells. You will become carrier of Gods glory! You will become the vessels through which Christ manifests His presence and glory to the world! Hallelujah! You become the dwelling place of Christ, and because He lives in you by His Spirit, you will also live. In other words, your hunger for righteousness is satisfied! You will obey His commandment because of His presence dwelling in you! Because He lives, you shall also live! Praise God! It’s impossible for those in whom Christ dwells to die spiritually because Jesus is alive in them! Jesus is alive in them imparting to them His divine life!

On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. John 14:20

You see, the Spirit will bring you to the realization that Christ is in you! Hallelujah! The Spirit baptizes you into Christ, such that you get to realize, not only that you are in Him and He is in you, but also that Christ is in the Father! What a union!

To whom is this privilege given to? To those who obey the commands of Jesus through the power and strength of the Holy Spirit!

Christ and His word are one!

You cannot separate Christ and His word! It’s impossible to love Jesus and not love His word. In fact, because you love Jesus, you will obey all His commands. Your love for Christ is revealed in your obedience to His word. How much are you hungry for His word? How much are you hungry to do His word?

The measure of your love for Jesus is known by the amount of hunger you have to do His word.

That’s why Jesus says, “blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness” Matthew 5:6. Why? Because that is the indication that you love God. When you hunger to do His word, you receive the Spirit as a guide and help to strengthen you and lead you to do His word. And when you keep His word by the Holy Spirit, Christ is manifested in you because the Christ and Father love you.

“… The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.” John 14:21

So why are you hungry for the Holy Spirit? Are you hungry because you just want to see signs and wonders, are you hungry because you want to be famous? If you hunger for the Spirit, it must be because you are hungry to have more of Jesus in your life! God satisfies only the right hunger! He doesn’t satisfy the hunger of curiosity, fame, selfish-ambition, but He satisfies hunger for righteousness. He gives the Spirit only to those who love Jesus and are willing to obey His commandment! Where there is hunger for the Spirit, there is always hunger for Jesus and more of His presence and power in your life.
